On Day 6 of the Conflict Memory & Education programme, I was lucky to have an opportunity to interview Hasan Hasanović, Genocide Survivor & Author of Surviving Srebrenica. Hasan was visiting Sarjevo with his Srebrenica Memorial team and had spent the day recording survivor testimonies for their new collection of 100 stories.
I wanted to discuss his personal story, that he has openly shared so honestly, but through three specific areas:
- Telling his story 5-6 times per day at Srebrenica Memorial Center
- Sharing his story with school children
- His new book focusing on survivors stories
Mr. Hasanovic was 18 when Bosnian Serbs systematically murdered more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in July 1995. Since then, Mr. Hasanovic has written an account of his story, Surviving Srebrenica (The Lumphanen Press, 2016), and spoken around the world on the topic of Srebrenica and genocide more broadly. For the last decade, he has served as a curator at the Srebrenica Memorial.
The interview is available to view now on the Conflict Reportage Archive Facebook Page – click here
Hasan has authored / co-authored two books – I’ve provided links below to each of them.:
